Hologram Fan Video Format: How to Make Videos That Look Right

By SpinnyAd Team. Updated September 30, 2026.

Square frame, pure black background, bold shapes and a short seamless loop. Here are the exact settings and the free tools that get you there.

The most common complaint in hologram fan reviews is “my videos look bad” or “I could not get my own content on it.” Both are fixable, and neither is really about the fan.

The settings

Setting Use this Why
Frame Square (1:1) The display is a circle; a 16:9 video gets cropped or letterboxed
Resolution 1024 x 1024 or higher Matches a 20 inch fan; the app downsizes for smaller fans
Background Pure black, RGB 0,0,0 Black pixels are LEDs turned off; anything else is lit
Subject Bold shapes, high contrast, few fine lines The fan has a few hundred LEDs per blade, so thin detail turns to noise
Length 10 to 15 seconds, seamless loop Long enough to read, short enough to repeat without a visible jump
Frame rate 25 or 30 fps Higher rates are wasted on the fan
Codec H.264 MP4, 8 to 12 Mbps The app accepts it directly
Audio None The fan has no speaker; audio tracks sometimes break conversion

How to make one

From a logo: put the logo on a black canvas, add a slow rotation or a fade-in and out, export a 12 second square MP4. Canva, CapCut and After Effects can all do this. Keep the logo inside the middle 80 percent of the frame so the edge of the circle does not clip it.

From a product photo: remove the background (any background remover works), place the cutout on black, and animate a gentle zoom or spin. Products with dark surfaces disappear; add a subtle rim light or outline.

From existing video: this only works if the subject is on a plain background you can key out. Chroma-key the background to black, crop to square, and check for fringing.

From text: large bold sans-serif, one to four words, white or a saturated color on black. Animate it flying in. Keep font size above 12 percent of the frame height.

Converting for the fan

Upload the MP4 through the fan’s app; it produces the fan’s .bin file and sends it to the fan over Wi-Fi. Conversion of a 15 second clip takes about a minute on a recent phone. If the app rejects the file, the usual causes are an audio track, a non-square frame, or a codec other than H.264. Re-export with those fixed.

If you would rather not

The custom logo animation service makes a loop from your logo file for $79, formatted for your fan, and every SpinnyAd fan ships with a starter library of loops already built to these rules.

Questions we get asked

What file type does a hologram fan use?

The fan plays its own binary format, usually a .bin file. The app converts a normal MP4 to that format when you upload. You never need to make the .bin yourself, but the MP4 has to be square and black-backgrounded to look right.

What resolution should the video be?

Square, at or above the fan's resolution: 512 x 512 for a two-blade fan, 1024 x 1024 for a 20 inch four-blade fan, 1280 x 1280 for a 25.6 inch. Larger is fine; the app scales it down.

Can I use a video with a white background if I invert it?

No. Inverting turns white to black but also turns the subject to its opposite colors. Remove the background instead, or use a video already made on black.
